Founders & story · from bunq’s own dossier
Founded 2012 by serial entrepreneur Ali Niknam (TransIP/Team.Blue founder), bunq received a Dutch banking license in 2014 — a rare full-stack neobank in Europe. Built a subscription-fee model (€3.99–€18.99/month) rather than relying on interchange or lending, focusing on digital nomads and international users across 30 European countries. Pivoting toward becoming a BaaS provider in 2024 via the Blockrise partnership, while continuing to push international growth with Wise-powered FX and Qover-embedded insurance.
