The story

Vertex is a 40+ year old enterprise tax technology company that IPO'd in 2020 (Nasdaq: VERX). Its core business is indirect tax determination, VAT/GST compliance, e-invoicing, and returns filing embedded into ERPs (SAP, Oracle, Workday, NetSuite, Microsoft) and e-commerce/marketplace platforms. Vertex is a tax-compliance infrastructure company — not a fintech — and does not operate its own banking, lending, card, or payment infrastructure. Its only payment-adjacent embedded product is the Vertex e-Commerce Checkout Form, which uses Stripe and PayPal as pass-through PSPs for merchant checkout tax collection.
