“Can a 175-year-old closed-loop card network evolve into a global agentic commerce and embedded-finance platform without diluting its premium brand?”
American Express began as a 19th-century freight company, pivoted to travelers cheques, and then to charge cards in 1958, ultimately becoming a closed-loop card network and national bank. The 2020 acquisition of Kabbage marked a serious move into embedded SMB lending and cash-flow tooling (now Business Blueprint). More recently Amex has been investing in agentic AI and embedded merchant/issuer infrastructure via Amex Sync and Amex Ventures, while also pruning products that didn't scale (Global Pay shutdown 2026).
