“Can Zillow become the operating system for the US home transaction — search, agent, mortgage, and closing — with each adjacency layered on the free consumer marketplace?”
Founded 2006 as a home-search + Zestimate marketplace monetized by agent advertising. Expanded into mortgages in 2008, but the big bet was Zillow Offers (2018-2021) — an iBuying operation that would buy, refurbish and resell homes. That pivot failed spectacularly, unwound in 2021 with ~$500M in losses. Since then Zillow has re-focused on being the 'operating system for modern real estate' — leaning into Zillow Home Loans (organic mortgage origination via 2018 acquisition of Mortgage Lenders of America) and Premier Agent lead-generation, with embedded finance appearing mostly as rent payments (ACH + Plaid) and mortgage origination rather than a BaaS or card play.
