“Can Canada's bank-owned acquirer evolve from a card-processing utility into a full commerce and embedded-payments platform for Canadian merchants?”
Moneris was founded in 2000 as a joint venture between Canada's two largest banks (RBC and BMO) to pool their merchant acquiring operations. It grew into Canada's largest acquirer, processing roughly 1 in 3 Canadian card transactions across ~325,000 merchant locations. After divesting its US business to Vantiv in 2016, the company refocused on Canada and has since moved beyond pure card acquiring into POS software (Moneris Go), restaurant SaaS (via UEAT), merchant cash advance (Moneris Advance), B2B payments, and a modern developer platform aimed at embedded payments.
