The story
Founded 2011 as ZenPayroll (YC W12), the company built a modern SMB payroll product and rebranded to Gusto in 2015. In 2020 it launched Gusto Wallet — a consumer-facing app that lets employees paid via Gusto access their pay early, hold funds in a Cash Account, and spend via a Gusto Debit Card. The move blurred the line between payroll SaaS and employee-facing neobanking, positioning Gusto as a financial-wellness distribution channel that sits on top of its payroll rails.
