The story
Founded 2011 as ZenPayroll, a YC W12 payroll startup for SMBs. Rebranded to Gusto in 2015 and expanded into benefits and HR. Launched Gusto Embedded Payroll in 2021 to turn its payroll engine into an API for vertical SaaS platforms. In September 2025 launched Gusto Money — a major expansion into embedded finance featuring a payroll line of credit (Parafin), bill pay (Melio), and invoicing — positioning Gusto as a financial OS for SMBs rather than just a payroll provider.
