“Can a bank-consortium-owned real-time payment app evolve from Sweden's default P2P rail into a full merchant-and-card payment platform before global wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) eat that space?”
Swish began in 2012 as a bank-owned utility for real-time person-to-person transfers in Sweden — a defensive collaboration among the country's six largest banks. It quickly became a de facto national payment rail, then expanded into merchant acceptance (Swish Företag), e-commerce/m-commerce APIs, and in 2024 into card-based tap-to-pay, positioning itself alongside Apple Pay and Google Pay rather than remaining a pure account-to-account rail. Ownership by the banks (via Getswish AB) means the terms, KYC, and customer relationship still sit with each member bank — Swish operates the switch and the app.
