“Can Africa's largest bank become the continent's dominant digital and embedded-finance platform, exporting African financial infrastructure globally via APIs and offshore hubs?”
Standard Bank was incorporated in London in 1862 to finance South African commerce; after the 1969 merger of the London parent with Chartered Bank (which became Standard Chartered), the African business evolved into today's Johannesburg-headquartered Standard Bank Group. Over the last two decades it has repositioned as an Africa-focused, digitally enabled financial services group with 21 sub-Saharan country presences, four global centres, and offshore hubs in Jersey, Isle of Man and Mauritius. The 2007 ICBC 20% shareholding cemented its China–Africa corridor. More recently the group has built out digital products (Shyft FX app, OneHub API Marketplace, Instant Money wallet) that push it beyond traditional banking into embedded and platform services.
