“Can a Tanzanian payments infrastructure company become the essential cross-segment financial rails for banks, MNOs, and merchants across Sub-Saharan Africa?”
Founded in 2001 as a prepaid airtime distributor, Selcom pivoted into fintech infrastructure by building Tanzania's largest independent POS terminal network for mobile money and bill payments. Over the following decade it systematically deepened its stack — adding mobile banking-as-a-service for banks, merchant acquiring (Selcom Pay / Selcom Lipa), and Card-as-a-Service via its Principal Mastercard membership. By the early 2020s Selcom had repositioned as a Pan-African cross-segment payments infrastructure provider, selling white-label banking, card issuing, remittance, agency banking, and identity (Selcom ID) to banks, MNOs, governments, and enterprises across Sub-Saharan Africa.
