“Can a delta-neutral synthetic dollar become the yield-bearing settlement layer — and consumer savings account — of the internet economy?”
Ethena launched in 2023 as a DeFi-native synthetic dollar issuer, monetizing the crypto basis trade to deliver yield on USDe/sUSDe. Through 2025-2026 it broadened its backing across non-crypto basis, DeFi/institutional lending, RWAs and liquid stablecoins, and layered a stablecoin issuance product (USDtb) and a whitelabel offering. In 2026 it pushed into consumer embedded finance with Ethena Pay — a non-US Visa spend card and stablecoin savings app — positioning USDe as the yield-bearing dollar behind a neobank-style front end.
