The story

Founded in 2017 as a corporate credit card for YC startups, Brex differentiated with cash-based and revenue-based underwriting rather than personal credit checks. It expanded into business banking (Brex Cash, treasury yield) and spend management software, positioning itself as a full financial OS for startups. In 2022, Brex shed its SMB segment and pivoted upmarket toward mid-market and enterprise, launching global expense management and multi-entity capabilities. In 2024–2025, it launched Brex Embedded to sell its payments infrastructure to B2B SaaS vendors, and secured an EU PI license before agreeing to be acquired by Capital One for $5.15B.
