The story

Bitcoin is a decentralized open-source protocol, not a company, first deployed in January 2009. It has evolved from a peer-to-peer payment experiment into a global reserve asset and payments rail, with an ecosystem of companies building embedded finance products on top of it. The Lightning Network has enabled Bitcoin to function as a real-time payments infrastructure layer. In 2024–2026, regulatory shifts in the U.S. began integrating Bitcoin into institutional finance products including ETFs and 401(k) plans.
