The story

Founded in 2014 as a restaurant food delivery app in Helsinki, Wolt expanded aggressively across Europe and beyond, growing to 27 countries and 500+ cities. Acquired by DoorDash in 2022, Wolt retained its brand and continued operating as a local commerce platform covering groceries, retail, and pharmacy. Beginning in 2024, Wolt began layering embedded finance products on top of its marketplace — launching Wolt Capital (merchant cash advances via finmid), acquiring its own payment licence, and launching a Visa-branded employee benefits card in Finland — signalling a strategic shift toward becoming the financial infrastructure layer for the merchants on its platform.
