“Can a bank-owned Nordic mobile wallet become the region's default consumer super-app for payments, identity, and commerce?”
Vipps began as an internal DNB mobile P2P product in 2015, was spun out and jointly owned by a consortium of ~100 Norwegian banks, and in 2022 merged with Danske Bank-owned MobilePay to build a pan-Nordic mobile wallet. The company today combines P2P transfers, in-store QR/Tap payments, e-commerce checkout, bill pay, login/identity, and — most recently — an AI shopping assistant, positioning itself as a Nordic super-app rather than only a wallet.
