“Can a bank-owned Nordic mobile wallet consolidate three national schemes into a pan-Nordic consumer payments network before global wallets (Apple/Google Pay, Wise, Revolut) commoditise it?”
MobilePay began in 2013 as Danske Bank's mobile P2P wallet in Denmark and Finland, later opened to all Danish banks in 2017 as a de-facto national payment rail. In 2021 Danske Bank agreed to merge MobilePay with Norway's Vipps and Finland's Pivo, forming Vipps MobilePay AS in 2022 — one of Europe's largest bank-owned mobile wallets. Product focus has since expanded from P2P to merchant acceptance, online/in-app payments, subscriptions, and, in 2026, contactless card-in-app 'tap' payments.
