The story

Formed from the 2014–2015 merger of Elance and oDesk, Upwork consolidated the fragmented freelance marketplace and IPO'd in 2018. Over time it has expanded from pure talent matching into embedded finance, adding payroll services, international payout infrastructure (Wise Platform), and embedded lending (YouLend) for freelancers. The company is actively building a financial layer on top of its marketplace to increase monetization per user and reduce churn from the core platform.
