“Can a Brazilian credit cooperative modernize its member-owned banking model into a full digital financial services platform (payments, Open Finance, DTVM) while preserving the cooperativist governance?”
Unicred is a 36-year-old Brazilian credit cooperative system (not a fintech), operating as a member-owned financial institution with 367k cooperados and 25 cooperatives. In late 2024 it restructured into a two-tier system with a National Central. Its embedded finance footprint is limited to Brazilian domestic rails: PIX, boletos (CNAB), an in-house acquiring product (Unicred Pay), Open Finance (mandated by BACEN), and a developer API portal operated on Sensedia infrastructure.
