Societe Generale

Can Societe Generale leverage its universal bank balance sheet and wholesale banking franchise to become the embedded finance infrastructure of choice for European corporates and merchants while digitising its own transaction and lending products?

The story

Societe Generale is one of France's oldest and largest universal banks, operating across retail banking, corporate & investment banking, securities services, and transaction banking. Following the 2008 trading scandal and subsequent regulatory tightening, SG pivoted toward strengthening its wholesale and transaction banking franchises while selectively building digital and embedded finance products. The launch of Scalexpert (embedded e-commerce financing) and Societe Generale Factoring's fintech partnerships reflect a deliberate move to offer banking-as-infrastructure to merchants and corporates, positioning SG as both a direct lender and an embedded finance provider.
