The story

Smokeball started as an Australian legal practice management software (2010), expanded to the US (2013) and UK (2023) and now serves 15,000+ law firms globally. The company has progressively layered embedded finance and AI on top of its core matter/document management: Stripe-powered card acceptance for legal billing, an in-product 'Smokeball Payments' brand, QuickBooks Online as the general-ledger back-office, and — most recently — Archie / Smokeball AI powered by OpenAI GPT-5.x models embedded into matters. The strategic direction is a fully integrated vertical SaaS OS for small law firms rather than a horizontal fintech.
