The story

Founded in 2017 after CEO Mark Straub (previously Khosla Impact backer of Branch and Flutterwave) identified the massive identity gap in Africa. Smile ID built an AI-native KYC infrastructure platform purpose-built for African government databases, ID documents, and biometric conditions. The company evolved from basic ID verification APIs into a full-stack identity platform covering onboarding, authentication re-verification, and AML screening — positioning itself as the compliance backbone for African fintechs, banks, and telecoms. Its differentiation lies in training models on local faces, documents, and real-world conditions (low light, low bandwidth) rather than adapting Western solutions.
