“Can an open-source e-commerce platform turn its PayPal partnership into a full embedded-finance stack for mid-market merchants?”
Bootstrapped and profitable from 2000 as a German open-source e-commerce platform, Shopware took its first outside capital in 2022 — a $100M growth round led by Carlyle with PayPal as strategic partner. That PayPal relationship has since defined its embedded-finance direction: Shopware Payments launched as a native, full-stack checkout product powered by PayPal's infrastructure, and in 2026 the company extended into embedded B2B credit via a Balance partnership. The platform is positioning itself less as a storefront CMS and more as the commercial OS for mid-market B2B and B2C merchants in Europe and North America.
Shopware processes payments through PayPal and Heidelpay.
Shopware's lending and capital products are provided by Balance, PayPal and Klarna.
Shopware integrates with QuickBooks, Xero, DATEV, lexoffice and sevDesk.
The Embedded Finance Index 2026 maps 4 layers in Shopware's stack: Payments / PSP (PayPal and Heidelpay); Lending (Balance, PayPal, Klarna, B2B pay-by-invoice (via Balance) and 3 others); Accounting (QuickBooks, Xero, DATEV, lexoffice and 1 other); Accounts Receivable (Balance).
Shopware was founded by Stefan Hamann and Sebastian Hamann and is founded in 2000, headquartered in Schöppingen, Germany.
Shopware has raised $100M in total (latest round: Growth, 2022).
