The story

ShopMessage launched in 2017 as a Facebook Messenger marketing automation platform for Shopify e-commerce brands, riding the 2017-2019 wave of Messenger-based conversational commerce. Their pitch was straightforward: 10x higher open rates than email via abandoned cart, back-in-stock and welcome flows delivered through the Messenger API. Facebook's 2020 restrictions on Messenger's promotional messaging window (24-hour rule, sponsored message limits) hollowed out the category, and headcount has since collapsed to 5 employees (down 60% YoY). The company remains active but is essentially a marketing SaaS zombie with no embedded finance surface.
