“Can a commerce platform replace the SMB merchant's bank, lender, and back office by leveraging native transaction data?”
Shopify began as pure e-commerce software but has steadily expanded into embedded finance for its 5M+ merchants. Shopify Capital (2016) was the first major financial product; Shopify Balance (2020) added banking; Shopify Credit added a business card; in October 2024 the company unified all of these under the 'Shopify Finance' brand inside the admin. The strategic bet is that Shopify can replace the SMB merchant's bank, lender, payroll provider, and tax filer — using transaction data already on the platform as the underwriting and reconciliation backbone.
