The story

Shopify Capital is the embedded-lending arm of Shopify, launched in 2016 to underwrite merchant cash advances and term loans against merchants' Shopify sales data. The product is operated in-house by Shopify Capital Inc. (Virginia entity) — Shopify owns the underwriting, capital deployment, and repayment-via-sales-percentage mechanics rather than orchestrating through a third party like Parafin or YouLend. In 2025 the program evolved beyond fixed advances with Capital flex, a dynamic working-capital line that draws on the same data-driven underwriting and replenishes as merchants repay.
