“Can a satellite imagery constellation become the default AI-ready data platform for global change detection?”
Planet was founded in 2010 as an Earth-imaging satellite company, building the largest commercial Earth-observation fleet (~200 satellites, 450 deployed total). It scaled from raw imagery sales into an analytics and platform business, culminating in the 2021 SPAC merger. Recent evolution has been toward being an AI/analytics platform for Earth data, not just a data provider — evidenced by the Sinergise, Bedrock Research, and VanderSat acquisitions and the MCP/agentic AI launches. This is a geospatial SaaS company, not an embedded finance operator.
