The story

Founded 2001 as Protx, a UK-focused online payment gateway. Acquired by Sage Group in 2006 and rebranded Sage Pay, becoming one of the UK's largest independent gateways. Sold to Elavon (U.S. Bancorp) in 2020 and rebranded Opayo. Since 2022–2023, Opayo has been absorbed into the Elavon brand — it now exists only as a product name for the ecommerce gateway and POS terminals sold by U.S. Bank Europe DAC / Elavon Merchant Services. Remains a multi-acquirer gateway for merchants who use non-Elavon acquirers.
