“Can Walmart's majority-owned consumer super-app capture the financial primary relationship of 250M weekly Walmart shoppers, displacing Affirm, Capital One, and traditional banks across BNPL, cards, deposits, and investing?”
Founded 2019 as a middle-class digital banking startup. Acquired by Walmart and Ribbit Capital in 2021 alongside earned-wage-access app Even, then relaunched as ONE in 2022 and rebranded again to OnePay in 2025. The company is now Walmart's in-house financial super-app: BNPL (exclusively powered by Klarna, displacing Affirm), credit cards (Synchrony issuance), brokerage, crypto (Zero Hash), and earned wage access (ONE@Work, formerly Even). Strategy is to own the consumer financial experience layer while leveraging community-bank sponsors (Coastal Community Bank, Lead Bank) for charter-required services.
