“Can a LatAm-born digital bank become a globally-licensed, full-stack financial platform spanning consumer, SME, premium cross-border, and crypto custody?”
Founded 2013 as a mobile-first credit card issuer for underbanked Brazilians frustrated by incumbent bank fees. Expanded into checking (NuConta 2017), personal lending, and investments — becoming a full-stack digital bank. IPO'd 2021 at ~$40B. Since 2021, growth thesis has shifted from Brazil-only consumer to LatAm-wide (Mexico, Colombia) + SME (Nu Empresas) + premium (Ultravioleta with Wise multi-currency) + US expansion (conditional OCC approval 2026 for Nubank N.A.). Nubank is itself the banking infrastructure for most products; embedded vendors appear at the edges (Zoop for acquiring, Chubb for insurance, Wise for cross-border).
