Founded in 2015 as a prepaid card challenger, Monzo secured a full UK bank licence in 2017 and rapidly expanded from a current account into a full-service consumer bank offering savings, credit, insurance, and investments. It extended into business banking in 2019, adding accounting integrations, loans for sole traders, international payments, and spend management tools. The embedded finance angle deepened as Monzo began orchestrating third-party products (Wise for FX, Qover/Zurich for insurance, Stripe for business payments, Veriff for KYC) inside its own app rather than building every layer in-house.
