“Can Nigeria's bank-owned settlement utility become a real-time, ISO 20022, cross-border payments platform for all of Africa?”
NIBSS is Nigeria's national payments infrastructure operator, jointly owned by all licensed Nigerian banks and the CBN. From clearing-and-settlement origins it evolved into the operator of the Nigeria Central Switch (NCS), NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP), BVN identity, NQR, and now the National Payment Stack (NPS) — an ISO 20022, open-banking-ready platform positioning NIBSS as Nigeria's Pix/UPI equivalent. Its strategic direction is to move from batch settlement utility to a real-time, API-first, cross-border-capable payments backbone for Nigeria and Africa.
