“Can a mid-sized Brazilian home-improvement retailer make its private-label credit card and BACEN-licensed payment institution the primary profit engine of the business?”
Founded 1967 as a home-improvement retailer for small and mid-sized cities in southern Brazil, Quero-Quero built its differentiation on integrated consumer finance — the VerdeCard private-label credit card. Over time the financial arm evolved into a licensed BACEN payment institution (Quero-Quero VerdeCard Instituição de Pagamento S.A.), operating a digital wallet, open-banking connectivity, credit and insurance distribution. Financial services now contribute a materially larger share of revenue and margin than pure retail, making Quero-Quero effectively a vertically-integrated retail+fintech operator serving Brazil's interior.
