“Can a messaging-app-native bank in Korea keep converting social distribution into full-stack retail banking scale?”
Founded in 2016 as a joint venture between Kakao Corp. and Korea Investment Holdings, KakaoBank leveraged the KakaoTalk messaging network to launch Korea's first mobile-native internet-only bank in 2017. It scaled to millions of customers within weeks by embedding banking into the country's dominant social app, achieved profitability by 2019, and IPO'd on KRX in 2021. Today it operates as a chartered national bank in Korea offering deposits, loans, debit/credit cards, and overseas remittance — a full-stack neobank rather than a BaaS provider.
