“Can an African healthcare EMR become the embedded financial operating system for the continent's fragmented private healthcare sector?”
Helium Health began as an EMR/HMIS SaaS company for African hospitals and clinics, then expanded into embedded finance in 2020 by launching HeliumCredit — collateral-free working-capital loans to healthcare facilities using EMR-generated transaction data. Following its 2023 $30M Series B led by AXA IM Alts, the company doubled down on fintech, layering HeliumWallet (payment processing for HMOs and private-pay patients) on top of HeliumCredit to become the embedded financial infrastructure for African healthcare providers. Additional pillars — HeliumDoc telemedicine (via the Meddy acquisition), HeliumCoPilot LLM assistant, and an anonymised health-data insights business — round out the platform.
