Can an expense management SaaS capture enough of the corporate spend workflow — card, reimbursements, invoicing, bill pay, travel — to become the financial OS for SMBs without a bank charter?

The story

Founded in 2008 as a receipt-scanning and expense-report SaaS, Expensify expanded over the next decade into a full spend management suite covering corporate cards, reimbursements, invoicing, bill pay, and travel. The introduction of the Expensify Card (Visa Commercial Card) transformed the business from a pure software play into an embedded-finance platform where card spend reduces SaaS subscription cost — blurring the line between software and financial infrastructure. Post-IPO, the company has remained small (under 140 employees) and focused on deepening integrations with accounting systems and adding global capabilities like multi-currency reimbursements and VAT reclaim.
