“Can Mexico's largest bank turn its balance sheet, license and 26M+ app users into an open-API embedded finance platform for the country's fintechs and enterprises?”
Founded 1932 as Bancomer, nationalized in 1982, re-privatized in 1991, and consolidated as Mexico's largest bank after the 2000 merger with BBVA-Probursa and the acquisition of Promex. Became a BBVA subsidiary in 2002 and rebranded to BBVA México in 2019. Over the past decade has pushed into digital banking, embedded finance and open APIs — including the 2016 Openpay acquisition (PSP), the BBVA API Market for embedded accounts / cards / auto insurance / payments, and Pago Directo BBVA as an account-to-account online payment method leveraging its 26M+ app customer base.
