“Can a mid-sized Spanish commercial bank reinvent itself as a payments-and-consumer-finance platform, riding digital euro and stablecoin rails?”

The story

Bankinter began in 1965 as an industrial bank JV between Santander and Bank of America, became independent in 1972, and evolved into a mid-sized Spanish commercial bank differentiated by digital innovation. In 2023 it entered embedded consumer payments via bkswipe. In late 2025 it formalized its payments push by creating a dedicated Consumer Finance, Payments and New Businesses Division reporting to the CEO, explicitly targeting digital euro and stablecoins — a clear strategic bet on becoming a payments-and-consumer-finance-led bank rather than a traditional deposit franchise.
