“Can a UK SME payments and accounting platform own the entire financial workflow — from invoice capture to ledger reconciliation — by embedding its own regulated e-money infrastructure?”
Founded in 2021 as a lean invoice-processing tool for UK SMEs, Apron grew into a full business finance OS combining bill pay, supplier payments, payroll, expense cards, and automated bookkeeping. After obtaining its own FCA EMI licence in January 2025, the company shifted from relying on third-party payment infrastructure to operating regulated e-money accounts directly, while deepening integrations with Xero, QuickBooks, and FreeAgent. The embedded-finance angle is end-to-end: every payment event — from invoice capture through FX conversion to ledger reconciliation — is handled inside Apron rather than scattered across separate apps.
