The story

Africa Re is a treaty-established, state-owned reinsurer — not a fintech and not an embedded finance company. Founded in 1976 by 36 African states and the AfDB to build reinsurance capacity on the continent, it has grown into the largest reinsurer in Africa (>20% market share, A rated by AM Best and S&P) with 10 offices, subsidiaries in South Africa, Egypt (Retakaful), and Dubai. Its business is B2B treaty and facultative reinsurance to insurance companies — there is no consumer product, no card program, no BaaS layer. The 'embedded finance' surface area is essentially nil.
