The story

Viber began as a free messaging app, was acquired by Rakuten in 2014, and has since pursued a 'super app' strategy. Viber Pay — the embedded peer-to-peer payments and e-money product — is the centerpiece of that pivot. Originally launched on Rapyd, in November 2025 Viber Pay migrated its 1M+ European users to Paynetics, an EU-licensed EMI, and added Visa virtual debit cards, signaling a deeper push into consumer financial services inside the messenger.
