The story

Founded in 2016 as a bank API aggregator enabling developers to access financial data, TrueLayer pivoted from pure data/AIS infrastructure toward becoming a payments network. The acquisition of Zimpler accelerated its European footprint and Pay by Bank transaction volume. By 2024–2025, TrueLayer had repositioned as 'Europe's leading Pay by Bank network', handling ~47% of all UK Pay by Bank transactions and $116B in annualised payment volume, with its embedded finance angle being the provision of open banking payments infrastructure (PIS/AIS/VRP) to merchants, fintechs, and enterprise clients including Amazon and Stripe.
