“Can a supermarket-branded bank survive as a distribution layer on top of Barclays' balance sheet and Aviva's underwriting?”
Launched 1997 as a JV with RBS to attach financial services to the Tesco grocery brand. Tesco bought out RBS in 2008 and operated Tesco Bank as a standalone licensed UK bank from Edinburgh for ~15 years. In 2024, Barclays UK acquired the retail banking business — credit cards, unsecured personal loans, deposits and the operating infrastructure — and Tesco Bank is now a Barclays brand under a 10-year distribution partnership. Insurance and money services were retained by Tesco (under Tesco Insurance & Money Services) and re-platformed onto third-party underwriters such as Aviva.
