“Can the world's largest coffee chain monetize its stored-value wallet and loyalty program as a true financial product while consolidating a fragmented global payments stack?”
Starbucks is a global QSR operator whose embedded-finance footprint is dominated by one breakout product: the Starbucks Rewards stored-value wallet, one of the largest closed-loop prepaid balances in the world. Around that wallet, Starbucks runs a multi-acquirer payment stack — historically Square in the U.S. (a 2012 partnership that helped catapult Square), and as of 2026 a major Adyen deployment across European stores building on Adyen's existing relationship with Starbucks licensee Alsea in Mexico. Treasury and FX are anchored by J.P. Morgan (cross-border China flows) and a bank syndicate (BofA, Wells Fargo, Citi) on the corporate revolver. The 2025 divestiture of the China retail business to Boyu Capital marks the company's biggest strategic shift in a decade.
