Spendesk

Can a licensed-payment-institution spend management platform become the unified financial OS for European mid-market finance teams by owning the card issuing, payments, and cross-border rails?

The story

Spendesk launched as a spend management SaaS platform for European businesses, combining virtual and physical corporate cards, invoice management, and expense reimbursement. Over time it built out Spendesk Financial Services SAS as a licensed payment institution, giving it direct control over card issuance and payment rails rather than relying entirely on third-party BaaS. In 2024-2025 Spendesk made significant embedded finance moves: partnering with Adyen for global acquiring/payment infrastructure, onboarding Marqeta as its card issuer processor in Europe, and integrating Wise Platform for cross-border payments — positioning the platform as an end-to-end financial OS for mid-market finance teams.
