“Can the payments rail that already runs Nigeria's Treasury Single Account become the default embedded-finance API layer for every government, bank, and fintech across Africa?”
Remita began as a product of SystemSpecs, a Nigerian enterprise software company founded in 1991 that originally resold accounting software. Remita itself launched in 2003 as an electronic payment platform, and its defining moment came in 2012 when the Nigerian federal government adopted it as the gateway for the Treasury Single Account (TSA) — cementing Remita as core national payments infrastructure. Today it operates as a full-stack Nigerian payments platform (collections, disbursements, interbank transfers via RITS, bill pay, VCN card payments, agent banking) and has expanded into embedded API infrastructure, positioning itself as the 'invisible engine' beneath government, corporate, and fintech systems in Nigeria.
