“Can Santander turn its in-house digital bank into a pan-European, cloud-native retail banking platform that scales beyond Spain?”
Openbank was launched by Santander in 1995 as a direct/telephone bank, briefly rebranded to Patagon in the dot-com era, then relaunched in 2017 as Spain's first fully-digital bank on a proprietary cloud-native core built in-house. The platform is now Santander Group's international digital-bank vehicle, operating in Spain, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, the US and Mexico, and — via the sister brand Openbank Pay together with Santander Consumer Finance — powering embedded BNPL/lending for merchants across Europe.
