“Can Afterpay evolve from a checkout BNPL widget into the embedded consumer-credit and cross-border commerce layer for Block's merchant and consumer ecosystems globally?”
Founded in 2014 as a pure-play BNPL service in Australia, Afterpay rapidly expanded to the US, UK, Canada, NZ, and Europe on the strength of its interest-free four-installment model. Acquired by Block (then Square) for ~$29B in 2022, it became a cornerstone of Block's consumer-finance ambitions, later rebranded as 'Cash App Afterpay' in the US to leverage the Cash App user base. Afterpay has since expanded beyond its core Pay-in-4 product into longer-term installment lending (Pay Monthly) and cross-border trade, moving from a checkout widget toward a fuller embedded finance layer for retail.
