“Can Adobe own the digital experience layer of commerce while remaining a neutral marketplace orchestrator for the payments and financial stack underneath?”
Magento was an open-source e-commerce platform acquired by Adobe in 2018 and rebranded as Adobe Commerce. Adobe's embedded-finance approach is distinctly platform-orchestrator: rather than owning the payments stack, Adobe runs a Commerce Marketplace where merchants choose from Stripe, Adyen, Checkout.com, and PayPal-backed Payment Services. Adobe's own 'Payment Services for Adobe Commerce' product is a thin orchestration layer over PayPal, with BNPL routed through PayPal Pay Later and Synchrony.
