The story

Rakuten began in 1997 as an e-commerce marketplace (Rakuten Ichiba) and built a sprawling Japanese ecosystem connecting commerce, banking, securities, insurance, credit cards, and — since 2020 — mobile telecom. The fintech businesses (Rakuten Bank, Card, Securities, Insurance) have become a structural pillar, with Rakuten Bank now operating a BaaS line (JRE BANK) and entering crypto-collateralized lending in 2026. Outside Japan, Rakuten Rewards (Ebates) operates as a separate cashback business, and Rakuten Advertising runs the affiliate network globally.
