The story

Founded in 1999 as a prepaid debit card provider for underbanked Americans, Netspend became one of the largest GPR prepaid brands before being acquired by TSYS in 2013 and subsequently coming under Global Payments. Following an FTC settlement in 2017, the company broadened its focus beyond consumer prepaid cards, adding earned wage access and launching a B2B embedded finance / BaaS division (Netspend Fintech Solutions) that offers digital banking, virtual card issuance, digital wallets, and EWA infrastructure to platform partners. The company now positions itself as both a consumer fintech and an infrastructure provider, with bank partners (Bancorp, Pathward, Republic Bank & Trust) sitting behind its regulatory envelope.
